Wall Street Market Close, Oct. 27, 2026: S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones

Updated every trading day: Stock market today →

U.S. stocks finished Tuesday, October 27, 2026 higher, but the shape of the rally matters more than the headline. The Nasdaq gained 1.27% on chip strength, the S&P 500 rose 0.65%, and the Dow barely moved (+0.13%) as Boeing collapsed. With the Federal Reserve already meeting, Tuesday looked like a market positioning ahead of a heavy Wednesday rather than one making a fresh conviction call.

Key takeaways

S&P 500 7,727.03 (+0.65%) · Nasdaq 26,502.62 (+1.27%) · Dow 52,429.92 (+0.13%). Top gainer: SoFi (+13.14%). Top decliner: Xylem (−13.26%), with Boeing (−10.82%) the heaviest drag on the Dow.

Biggest winner and biggest loser

SoFi +13.14%

A third-quarter beat driven by consumer lending. Growth is real, but so is credit risk: a lender rallying this hard is priced for benign loan losses.

Xylem −13.26%

The worst large-cap move of the day. Water-tech is supposed to be a steady compounder; a drop this size shows how little room high multiples leave for disappointment.

What moved the market

  • Boeing (−10.82%): a $116M quarterly loss; adjusted −$0.34 a share against −$0.21 expected. Revenue rose 4% to $24.19B, ahead of the $23.84B forecast, but a lower delivery target sent shares to their weakest level since November 2025.
  • Celestica (+12.66%): revenue up 83% on AI data-center demand.
  • UPS (+5.97%) and Royal Caribbean (+5.68%): beat and raised.
  • Broadcom (+4.16%): a $63B financing package tied to Anthropic.
  • Tesla (+4.07%): upgraded at Barclays. Dell (+7.40%): new cybersecurity tools.
  • Coca-Cola (−1.27%): EPS $0.91 vs. $0.88, revenue +7% to $13.4B, guidance raised, yet soft North American volume won the argument.
  • Cintas (−4.67%): the FTC moves to block its $5.5B UniFirst deal.
  • Meta (−1.63%): Nvidia will put $3B into its share offering, a reminder that new shares dilute existing holders.
  • PayPal (+1.31%): earnings beat, revenue miss. Valero (−8.99%): refiners hit by oil swings.
  • Macro: consumer confidence hit its best level since June. The 10-year yield sat near 4.99%, WTI slipped below $100, Brent near $115, gold +1.2% to about $4,063.

Critical take

Breadth is the weak spot. When the Nasdaq outruns the Dow by more than a full point, the index is leaning on a short list of AI and semiconductor names. That works until one of the giants disappoints, and two of them report tomorrow.

The earnings reaction function is also unforgiving. Coca-Cola beat on nearly every line and still fell; Boeing beat on revenue and was crushed on guidance. Investors are paying for the next quarter, not the last one. That is a sign valuations already assume a lot.

Finally, a 10-year yield near 5% is a real competitor for equity money. Stocks near record highs with bonds paying this much only make sense if earnings keep compounding fast. Any hawkish tone from the Fed tests that assumption directly.

What to watch Wednesday

  • Fed decision at 2:00 p.m. ET, press conference 2:30 p.m. Markets expect a hold after September’s hike.
  • Microsoft and Alphabet report after the bell.
  • Amazon, Intel and Coinbase report Thursday.
