Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026 · By Juan Reina · Approximate prices at the 4:00 p.m. ET stock market close. We inform; we don’t give investment advice.
Key takeaways
- Bitcoin gave back its post-election bounce, sliding about 5.6% to roughly $75,900 after touching $80,882 on Wednesday night. It is now about 40% below its $126,156 record.
- Crypto traded like a tech stock: the Nasdaq’s 5.5% plunge on the AI-chip selloff pushed investors out of risk assets across the board.
- Leverage made it worse: more than $560 million in leveraged positions were liquidated in a single hour, about $530 million of them longs, according to CoinGlass.
- Spot ETFs fell with the market: BlackRock’s IBIT lost 5.1% and Fidelity’s FBTC 4.9%; the iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) dropped 7.3%.
- Policy overhang: uncertainty over the CLARITY Act after Democrats won Congress, plus the fallout from the $6.3 billion Binance hack.

Why crypto fell
The trigger came from equities. Fears that a Democratic Congress will slow data-center construction sent semiconductors to their worst day since March 2020 and the Nasdaq into correction. Bitcoin has been trading in step with tech stocks, so it followed. Strong labor data added pressure: weekly jobless claims fell to 189,000, keeping a December Fed rate hike on the table, and higher rates tend to weigh on non-yielding assets like bitcoin. Once prices broke lower, forced liquidations of leveraged long positions accelerated the slide; about 165,000 traders were liquidated over 24 hours, and the largest single liquidation was $6.62 million on Hyperliquid. Bitcoin ETFs and your IRA
Spot bitcoin ETFs had more than $1.1 billion in net outflows over three sessions before a small inflow of about $74.6 million on Wednesday, led by Fidelity’s FBTC (DefiLlama data). Many U.S. investors now hold bitcoin through these funds in brokerage accounts or IRAs, so Thursday’s move showed up directly in retirement statements. Two reminders: ETF shares only trade during market hours, while bitcoin trades 24/7, so ETF prices can gap at the open; and crypto funds are far more volatile than broad stock index funds. Washington and Binance
The CLARITY Act, which would set U.S. market-structure rules for crypto, faces a less certain path after Democrats won both chambers in Tuesday’s midterms. Meanwhile, Binance’s Nov. 3 post-mortem on its Oct. 29 hack, with reported losses of $6.3 billion to $6.43 billion, said attackers compromised employee devices and abused its internal transaction-signing system rather than stealing private keys. That keeps exchange security in focus for anyone holding coins on a platform rather than in self-custody.
Altcoins
Uniswap (−11%) and NEAR (−10.1%) were the weakest of the top 25 coins excluding stablecoins. Zcash held up better (−3.6%). Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market value stood near 59%. Stablecoins held their dollar peg; for expats and remote workers in Colombia, dollar stablecoins remain a common way to hold dollars. See USDT vs. pesos and bitcoin in Colombia for expats.
What to watch Friday, Nov. 6
- 8:30 a.m. ET — October jobs report (about 59,000 jobs expected). A hot number could revive Fed-hike bets and weigh on crypto; a soft one could help.
- Tech stocks: while bitcoin trades with the Nasdaq, a chip rebound or a further slide will likely set the tone.
- Levels: $75,600, a seven-week low, as support; $80,000–$81,000 as resistance.
- ETF flow data for Thursday.
