Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026 · Colombia’s first session on New York hours (9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET) · By Juan Reina.
Key takeaways for dollar investors
- COLCAP +1.47% to 2,527.66 in the first session after Monday’s holiday and Friday’s surprise rate hold at 12.25%.
- Grupo Sura +4.56% hit a 52-week high; Grupo Cibest (the Bancolombia holding) rose 3.05% locally.
- Ecopetrol −3.06% locally, catching up with Monday’s oil plunge; its NYSE ADR (EC) bounced 2.29%.
- The peso slipped 1.35% to 3,237 per dollar — so in dollar terms the COLCAP gained only about 0.1%. That gap explains why COLO fell 0.82% while local stocks rallied.
Local gains vs. dollar returns
For U.S.-based investors, Tuesday was a textbook example of currency drag: the index rose 1.47% in pesos, but the dollar rose 1.35% against the peso, leaving a near-flat return in dollars. Over 2026 the picture is far better — the COLCAP is up 22% in pesos and the peso has strengthened about 15%, a double tailwind for dollar holders.

What moved the peso
The peso weakened on caution ahead of the U.S. midterms, a firmer global dollar, Iranian rhetoric on the conflict with the U.S., and expectations of fewer dollars in the market after the central bank bought $2 billion from the government. It traded between 3,216.50 and 3,255 with about $1.05 billion in volume. Read why the peso is so strong in 2026.
